The Most Expensive Decision I Ever Made Was Walking Away.

Original artwork for Lesson 4: The Most Expensive Decision I Ever Made Was Walking Away.

You can’t own results you no longer influence.

There was a client I couldn't afford to lose.

The revenue mattered.

The relationship mattered.

Walking away made no financial sense.

But I did it anyway.

Not because the business was failing.

Not because we disagreed.

Because I no longer believed I could make the difference they had hired me to make.

A new executive had arrived.

She was smart.

Driven.

Well-intentioned.

Our conversations gradually changed.

Instead of exploring ideas, we found ourselves defending decisions.

I realized my role had shifted from trusted advisor to someone simply validating decisions that had already been made.

Then I realized something uncomfortable.

If I stayed, I'd own results I no longer had the ability to influence.

So I resigned.

It cost me one of my largest accounts.

For a while, I wondered if I'd made the biggest mistake of my career.

Years later...

I realized it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

It reminded me that my first responsibility wasn’t keeping the client.

It was telling the truth.

Even when the truth costs you the client.

Integrity is sometimes expensive.

But compromising it costs far more.

Sometimes the client you can’t afford to lose…is yourself.
